All the information about fish oil and omega 3 can be confusing.
Another aspect of this topic is the importance of distilled fish
oil.
When discussing the importance of fish oil and the omega 3s
contained in it (DHA and EPA) one thing that should be considered is
molecularly distilled fish oil. What is molecularly distilled fish
oil? Molecular distillation is the process used to purify vitamins.
This process is the only process that can effectively remove metals,
PCBs and other harmful toxins making the product safe enough for human
consumption.
There are companies that do not use this process because of its
high expense. The equipment costs and setup are very expensive and
not easy to accomplish. Smaller manufacturers can not afford the
process. This means that the fish resources used to create the oils
would need to be completely free of contaminants to be healthy for
your family. Not necessarily a chance anyone wants to take. This
expense explains the price differences in some products.
The molecular process uses a solvent in filtration and there are a
variety of solvents that can be used. One commonly used solvent is
hexane because it is inexpensive. Unfortunately, it is also not
especially effective at removing residual components that can then be
passed on when the oil supplement is ingested. Another such solvent
is a food grade ethanol, which does not leave a residual component.
This produces the purest fish oil possible but of course is very
expensive.
So, when you are in the market for a fish oil supplement, there are
other things o consider than the potency of the omega 3s. Absolutely
make sure you research the purification process used to get that
wonderful supplement into that bottle and into your hand. It would
completely defeat the purpose of good health if your family is
ingesting toxins when they are getting there omega 3s. Some of these
toxins can be as bad as the original health issue you are trying to
solve.
As always, when introducing new supplements into your dietary
schedule, be sure to consult your physician as some supplements can
have an adverse effect on medications and can aggravate some medical
conditions. Take the time to do the research and you will be
providing your family with everything they need for good health.
